Holistic Balance Chinese Herbal Therapy

Chinese Herbal Therapy, also known as Chinese phytotherapy, is a holistic treatment method in Traditional Chinese Medicine in which Chinese herbs are used for a wide range of health conditions. The first comprehensive Materia Medica text, which includes medicinal Chinese herbs as well as minerals and animal products, is over 2,000 years old and contains information on the tastes, properties and functions of these medicinal substances. Since then, herbal medicine has evolved and more and more medicinal herbs and substances have been discovered and added to this rich herbal teaching.

Chinese herbs and acupuncture are both treatment methods within Chinese medicine that share the same concepts and mechanisms. A holistic view looks at the human being as a whole that consists of all kinds of dependent parts. As soon as one or more of these parts is out of balance, it will affect all the others. Symptoms and complaints arise from a disruption of and between the parts, various organ systems and body functions. With both acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, treatment aims to restore harmony in the body and activate the body’s self-regulating ability.

Classical acupuncture and Chinese herbs can both be used for many different health complaints. However, for some complaints it is advisable to take acupuncture treatments specifically, while with other complaints you may benefit more from phytotherapy. For instance, pain complaints are excellent to treat with acupuncture, while skin complaints such as eczema or psoriasis and menstrual complaints are better treated with Chinese herbs. In contrast, many complaints, including sleep problems, psychosomatic complaints and stress or mental, emotional symptoms, can benefit from a combination of Chinese herbs and acupuncture. For this reason, these forms of therapy are part of holistic medicine, combining different treatment methods to achieve the best results.
